Applications are now open for the 2023 National and Mainland positions. The positions available to apply for are as follows:

Role Descriptions:

The Head coaching position for North Canterbury Basketball teams must apply formally in writing. 

The Assistant Coach and Development Coach positions will be filled from registered and accredited North Canterbury Basketball coaches and identified through an annual expression of interest process. 

Applicants for a position must meet the Essential Criteria – see below - for that position. In addition, the other criteria will be assessed in the following manner: Highly Desirable Criteria will weigh heavily in favour of applicants who comply. 

All applicants are required to be a level 1 BBNZ coach. This can be completed here (https://nz.basketball/get-involved/coaches/online-courses/ ).

A shortlist for interviews will be determined by the selection panel and selected applicants will be invited to interview for the Head coach position. 

Following the application, review, shortlist and interview process assessing the selection criteria, a recommendation will be made by the selection panel to the Community Operations Manager for presentation to the Committee for final approval. 

Dates of Tournaments:

U19 Nationals: 2 – 5th June at Mainpower Stadium (Rangiora)

U17 Nationals: 4 – 7th July at Walter Nash Stadium (Wellington)

U15 Nationals: 12 – 15 July at Pulman Arena (Auckland) 

U19, U17 and U15 Mainland place and time tbc. 


Essential Criteria:

Head Coach

Head Coach will be required to liaise and report directly to the Community Operations Manager or their delegate and are responsible for the provision of an appropriate sports program, including Technical, Tactical, Physiological, Psychological and Well Being (welfare) as determined by NCBA. Head Coaches will provide a professional and positive learning environment for athletes and coaching staff and accepts the responsibility of being a positive role model for North Canterbury befitting the office of National, Mainland Head Coach. A thorough understanding of National, Mainland developmental philosophies is necessary. Head Coaches will be appointed for a period of one (1) year, with a review to be undertaken at the end of the appointment. 


Assistant and Development Coach 

Assistant/Development Coaches will be required to liaise and report directly with the respective National, Mainland Head Coach. They will assist the National, Mainland Head Coaches in the provision of a robust sports program and provide a professional and positive learning environment for athletes. Assistant/Development Coaches accept the responsibility of being a positive role model for North Canterbury befitting the National and Mainland Assistant/Development Coach. Assistant/Development Coaches will be appointed for a period of one (1) year, with a review to be undertaken at the end of the appointment. 


Application process for Head Coach:

Head Coach applicants must submit a formal letter outlining their prior experience in basketball coaching, what age, gender and level. Please include your personal coaching goals for the team you are applying for as well as the team goals you want to set out if you are successful. Style of play will be outlined further if you are successful, but it will be in line with NCBA style of play. We also want to know about you, so tell us a bit about yourself and your personal background (where you are from, what you do etc) and basketball background (whether that be playing, coaching, reffing, parenting etc). Please include any and all coach developing courses or programs you have completed or intending to complete i.e., Eagles Coaching 


Please send this letter to admin@northcanterbury.basketball by 5pm January 20th 2023. A shortlist for Head coach positions will be named early February and coaches will be appointed by mid-February. 


Application process for Assistant and Development Coach:

The Assistant Coach and Development Coach positions will be filled from registered and accredited North Canterbury Basketball coaches and identified through an expression of interest process. This process will be posted onto North Canterbury Basketball Website, Facebook and Instagram in the coming weeks. It is your responsibility to make sure you meet the deadline for this process.
